Chimamanda Adichie Opens Up on Son’s Death: “I Don’t Want to Return to Nigeria”

Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has revealed that the tragic death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu, has profoundly changed her relationship with Nigeria.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Adichie spoke about how the devastating loss has affected her emotionally and altered her connection to the country that once played a central role in her identity and literary career.

Asked whether Nigeria still felt close to her heart, the celebrated author gave a blunt and deeply personal response.

“My feelings toward Nigeria have changed. I do not want to go back to Nigeria.”

Adichie’s comments reflect the extent to which the loss of her son has reshaped her relationship with home. Nigeria has long been an important part of her personal identity and creative work, with the country featuring prominently in many of her acclaimed writings.

However, following Nkanu’s death, Adichie says her feelings towards returning have changed significantly.

Her revelation offers a rare glimpse into the personal impact of grief on an author whose public identity has often been closely connected to Nigeria and its culture.

For Adichie, Nigeria is no longer simply the country she grew up in or the place that inspired much of her writing. It has also become connected to an intensely painful chapter in her life, prompting her to reconsider what returning home means to her.
