Omotola Dismisses Longstanding Rivalry Rumours With Genevieve Nnaji

Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade has opened up about her relationship with fellow screen icon Genevieve Nnaji, revealing how fans and the media may have contributed to the perception of a rivalry between the two actresses.

During their peak years in Nollywood, Omotola and Genevieve were widely regarded as two of the biggest female stars in the Nigerian film industry. Their popularity, acting careers and influence often placed them side by side, with fans constantly debating who was the bigger star.

According to Omotola, however, the rivalry that many people perceived may have been much bigger in the public imagination than it was in reality.

“Fans made Genevieve Nnaji and I quarrel. We were basically the Wizkid and Davido of Nollywood back then. The fans turned our rivalry into something bigger than it really was,” she said.

Her comments draw a striking comparison to the Nigerian music industry, where fan bases have often placed major artistes such as Wizkid and Davido against each other in debates over their achievements, influence and status.

Similarly, Nollywood audiences created their own camps around Omotola and Genevieve during the height of their careers. Every new movie, award, endorsement or career achievement could become another reason for fans to compare the two actresses.

Both women emerged as defining figures of Nollywood’s golden era and built impressive careers independently. Their names became almost synonymous with the industry’s growing international recognition, while their onscreen performances and celebrity status made them two of the most discussed actresses of their generation.

However, constant comparisons between the actresses gradually created a narrative of competition that extended beyond their professional careers. What may have initially been healthy competition between two successful actresses was, according to Omotola, amplified by fans to the point where it was perceived as a personal feud.

Omotola’s revelation highlights the powerful role audiences can play in shaping celebrity narratives. In an era where social media has made fan debates even more intense, comparisons between stars can quickly develop into perceived rivalries, even when the celebrities themselves may not view their relationship in the same way.

The Omotola-Genevieve comparison remains one of the most memorable celebrity conversations from Nollywood’s earlier years. And with Omotola now describing them as the “Wizkid and Davido of Nollywood,” her comments have once again sparked conversations about how much of celebrity rivalry is real and how much is created by the fans.
